Mysterium Fidei Monastery & Secret Garden in Valletta

5.Mysterium Fidei Monastery & Secret Garden in Valletta

★★★★★★★★★★5.0 · 240 reviews · 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes (approx.) · from $12Top rated

Enter St Catherine’s Monastery in central Valletta and use an English audio guide to explore its old kitchens, bedrooms, washrooms, crypt, and enclosed garden. The visit takes about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. Expect a quiet, atmospheric look at cloistered life, though only ground-floor areas are open.

“St. Catherine's Monastery for female orphans dates back to 1575. Today it features a relic from the holy cross (certified as authentic under seal of the Vatican). You can also witness the starkness of the monastery's living quarters and day-to-day life of the nuns who took vows to limit their contact from the outside world. We loved their beautiful garden in the center of the monastery and particularly enjoyed seeing the 2 turtles and a cat that are sheltering there. Not so much the white rabbit in the pen awaiting slaughter, as the Maltese eat rabbits. Probably the highlight was the room that held the tombs of the dead sisters.…”
